| Seachas na míoltóigí a thagann amach sa tráthnóna, níl tada chomh deas le píosa de lá a chaitheamh ar an bportach. Ach fíor droch sheasúr a bhí ann in 2009. Thit an oiread sin báistí i gcaitheamh an tsamhraidh go bhfuil go leor den mhóin báite fliuch. B'éigean go leor de a gróigeadh arís in áiteacha níos tirime nó ar phallets. Is beag duine ar éirigh leo í uilig a thabhairt abhaile go dtí seo. Bhí siad ag rá nach bhfacthas a leithead ariamh. Ach fós is deas an áit í, lán le fraoch, crainnte beitheanna, éanacha agus ainmhí, fia ina measc. An mó bliain eile a mbeidh cead ag muintir an pharóiste móin a bhaint dóibh fhéin san áit seo? Sin ceist mhaith. |
Apart from the midges that come out in the late evening, there's nothing as nice as spending a few hours on the bog. But the 2009 season has been very difficult. So much rain fell during the summer that much of the sods were still saturated well into September. Much of it had to be footed again on drier patches of ground or on pallets. Very few have succeeded in bringing it all home as yet. ''We never saw it as bad as this.' But still its a lovely place to be, full of heather and birch trees, birds and animals including deer. How long more will the people of the parish be allowed to harvest turf here? That's a good question. |

Bhuel, b'fhéidir go bhfuil an freagra ann cheanna féin. Díreach taobh amuigh d'Áth Buí, tá páirc mhór saileach curtha. Déanfar slíseanna adhmaid as an tsaileach seo agus dófar é i sorn adhmaid. Barra é seo a fhásann in aon séasúr amháin agus nach gá é a chur ach uair amháin. An é seo an t-ábhar tine a bheas againn amach anseo? |
| Of course some bogs will have to be preserved. And what will happen the 'cut-away?' Recently I visited Lough Boora Parklands in Offaly where Bord na Móna are doing a fantastic job recreating peatland habitat. Some day there will be no more turf left to cut and then what will happen? Well, maybe we already have the answer. On the edge of Athboy is a field of sallies. These will be turned into wood chips which can then be burned in wood stoves. This crop grows every year and only has to be planted once. Will this be the fuel of the future? |

Thug gach duine a bpicnic féin leo agus dúradh go leor dánta, sean is nua ar an lá.

APoetry Picnic was held in the the Rememberence Park in Ráth Chairn on the 13 September, organised by Dámh na Mí. The poet Áine Ní Ghlinn was special guest.
Everybody brought their own picnic and poems old and new.

Tá gabháil beo. Itheann sé an siúcra agus tagann dhá rud uaidh - alcóil a fhanann sa bhfíon agus déocsaíd charbóin a ealaíonn tríd an airlock.
Yeast is alive. It lives off the sugar and gives off 2 bi-products - alcohol that stays in the wine and carbon dioxide that escapes through the airlock. |
Cuir spúnóg de 'Ghabháil Fíona' isteach i ngloine agus clúdaigh é le huisce (teas bainne na bó). Cuir na h-ullaí i mbuicéad, meascán d'ullaí cócaireachta, ithe agus fia-ullaí. Brú iad le casúr go dtí go bhfuil 3/4 buicéad d'ullaí bruite ann. Craith dhá spunóg de 'Pectolase agus Yeast Nutrient' ar na hullaí. Clúdaigh na hullaí le huisce (teas bainne na bó) suas go dtí trí h-orlaí ón mbarr. Nuair atá an gabháil leáite agus cúr ar an mbarr, dóirt isteach ar na hullaí é agus caith éadach os a chionn. Tar éis cheithre lá, doirt an leacht isteach i demijohn agus cuir 1kg de siúcra atá leáite in uisce té isteach ann freisin. Socraigh an airlock ar an mbarr, leathlán le huisce. Ná líon an demijohn suas go barr le huisce go dtí mbeidh an gearradh mór thart, ie, tuairim is seachtain. Cuir in áit té é le taobh na tine nó cófra te. Glanfaidh sé de réir a chéile. Tiocfaidh deireadh leis an ngearradh. Úsáid píobán chun an fhíon a bhaint ón ndríodar agus cuir i mbuidéal don Nollaig é. Sláinte is fad saol. |
| Put a teaspoon of wine yeast in a glass of lukewarm water. Put the apples, cookers, eaters and crabs if you can get them in a bucket and crush them. Three quarters fill the bucket with crushed apples. Shake two spoons of Pectolase and Yeast Nutrient over the apples. Cover the apples with lukewarm water up to a few inches from the top. When the yeast is diluted, pour it over the apples and cover with a cloth. After four of five days pour the liquid off the apples into a demijohn and add 1kg of sugar diluted in hot water. Fix airlock and half fill with water. Dont fill the demijohn to the top yet until the initial fermentation is over, about one week. Put in a warm place beside the fire or hot press. It will clear eventually. The fermentation will stop. Use a tube to siphon off the wine into clean bottles for Christmas. Sláinte. |
